Upgrade your IT career at no cost to you

Take specialized classes offered at Stark State College. Work with SSC’s career development experts to plug your new certifications into the right job. Choose from Web technology, software development, Web security, help desk service, network specialist and other areas.

These non-credit courses are all funded by an Ohio Technical Skills
Training Grant.

  • Eligibility:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Must be eligible to work in the US
    • Must have registered for SSS or be a veteran
    • Must have a Social Security card
    • Must be underemployed* or unemployed

    * Underemployed means that the applicant is currently employed but is highly skilled but working in a low-paying job; highly skilled and working in a low skilled job; is working part-time but is seeking full-time work in the industry.

  • Experience:

    • Must have experience in some facet of Information Technology beyond Microsoft Office
    • Good job history
  • Classroom Training:

    • CompTIA A +

      This two-section class covers the fundamentals of computer technology, installation, configuration of PC’s laptops and related hardware; basic networking and the skills required to install and configure PC operating systems, as well as configuring common features (network connectivity and email) for mobile operating systems, Android and Apple iOS.
    • CompTIA Network +

      This class covers, installation and configuration, media and topologies, management and security. This certification can lead to job roles such as network administrator, network technician, network installer, help desk technician and IT cable installer; the revised objectives now address virtual networking and give increased attention to network security and coverage of the seven layer OSI (open System Interconnection) model.
    • CompTIA Security +

      This is an international, vendor neutral class that develops skills and competencies in network security, compliance and operational security, threats and vulnerabilities, applications data and host security, access control and identity management and cryptography.

    Industry recognized Credentials through CompTIA - Computing Technology Industry Association

  • Exams:

    • Each class provides test prep materials as well as the cost of the voucher to take the certification exam.
    • Stark State will assist with job search and placement.
  • On-the-Job-Training (OJT) assistance:

    • On-the-Job-Training (OJT) assistance pays a portion of wages for newly-hired employees trained and employed through the H1B Technology Grant.
    • The assistance may cover up to 50% of the new hire’s wages for a period of time while learning the new job.
  • Goals:

    • Gets unemployed people back to work faster by helping companies with training costs.
    • Bridges gaps between a participant’s current new skills and the application of those skills in the new job.
    • Helps defray the extraordinary costs to employers training new people.
