receives national and state awards

The Beta Gamma
Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Stark State College
recently received national and state awards.
Nationally, Dean of
Student Services Wallace Hoffer received the Administrator Award
of Distinction for demonstrated support of the chapter, while
the Stark State chapter was named among the top 100 chapters
nationally. Nearly 1200 national chapters compete for these
awards annually.
On the state
level, Stark State College hosted the Ohio Region Awards
Convention comprised of 38 state chapters from Ohio and northern
West |

Virginia. Chapter Advisor Cherie Barth, student activities
coordinator at Stark State, received the most distinguished
advisor award. Carol Kirkpatrick, a business management
sophomore, was elected 2008-09 president of the Ohio region.
Dave Sigmund, an applied industrial technology sophomore and
2007-08 Ohio region president, was recognized for his service as
region president and as northeast district representative. Chris
Monroe, who graduated in December with an environment, health
and safety technology degree, received the distinguished chapter
president award for his service as president during 2007-08. |
Phi Theta Kappa is the
international honor society for two-year colleges. To qualify, a student
must have a cumulative 3.75 grade point average in at least 16 semester
hours of degree-related courses. To maintain membership, a student must
sustain a cumulative 3.4 GPA. The Stark State College Beta Gamma Epsilon
chapter of Phi Theta Kappa currently has 250 members. Since its
inception in 1996, the chapter has inducted over 1200 members.
