General Meeting Minutes

November 15, 2008

Chapter President Sandra Crossen called the meeting to order at 12:09 p.m. with 5 officers, 2 alumni, 3 members, 8 inductees, and 1 guest present.

Jeremy Smith gave our monthly budget report: with the additions of a grant of $2,250 and $115 from the Honors Green Day gift basket silent auction, the current budget in our account is $3,867.28.

Sandra Crossen mentioned a couple of fund raising opportunities that are coming up. The deadline for the cookie dough is Nov.17 and the nuts is Nov.24. She also asked for volunteers to man the table and bake for the bake sale that will be held on Nov. 19 in the cafeteria.

Sandra Crossen awarded an Enhanced Member star to Dave Spencer.

Cherie Barth gave a brief update about the Hites Foundation - $25 was raised at Honors Green Day by the chapter and the latest update at the International level indicated that $269.000 of the $350,000 goal had been reached. She also gave an update about the Ohio Specialty License Plate - Rep. Oelslager will introduce the bill when the legislature returns to session.

Sandra Crossen gave a follow-up report on Make A Difference Day - 67 people collected 166 bags of trash from 9 parks and 3 roadways. The Boy Scouts recovered a 1,000 ft. coil of stolen electrical wire. She also distributed a National Day of Doing Good Annual Challenge Patch to all who attended. Julie Sproul and Carol Kirkpatrick gave their impressions of the lecture by John David.

Jeremy Smith talked about the hijinks that ensued at the Leadership Conference at Hocking College.

Sandra Crossen gave a follow-up report on the Honors Green Day Project - 13 locks of hair were collected for Locks of Love. 14 cell phones were collected. The art projects were a hit with the younger set. No middle or high school students attended, although 168 Stark/Summit County schools were invited. 43 total participants took part in the project.

Sandra Crossen discussed the upcoming Founders Day/Good as Gold Week activities from Nov. 17-21: the sidewalk chalk after today's meeting, the Bake Sale on Nov. 19 from 10-6, and also reminded everyone to wear their Phi Theta Kappa apparel.

Cherie Barth explained a little about the Hallmarks and what they mean.

Cherie Barth gave some background on the New Beginnings Holiday Party to be held on Dec. 12 and reminded everyone to have the gifts returned to her office by Dec. 8.

Sandra Crossen announced that the Free Health Clinic needed technical and painting help, the ICC student government requested volunteers to help update club websites, and the digital picture frame in the hallway display case was donated by Walmart.

Sandra Crossen requested volunteers to act as marshals at Fall Graduation to be held at the Canton Civic Center on Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. and greeters for Welcome Back to SSCT on Jan. 12 and 13 from 7 a.m-1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.

Sandra Crossen announced that the next meeting will be held on Jan. 17 at noon with a scrapbook party to follow.

Cherie Barth inquired if there would be any interest in a Professional Development Day where students would role play diversity issues with faculty.

Cherie Barth led 8 new members in the informal induction ceremony and reminded all that the formal induction will occur on Apr. 26 at 2 p.m. in the SSCT atrium.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:32 p.m. by Sandra Crossen.
