Meeting Minutes November
15, 2008 Chapter President Sandra
Crossen called the meeting to order at 12:09 p.m. with 5 officers, 2 alumni,
3 members, 8 inductees, and 1 guest present. Jeremy Smith gave our
monthly budget report: with the additions of a grant of $2,250 and $115 from
the Honors Green Day gift basket silent auction, the current budget in our
account is $3,867.28. Sandra Crossen mentioned
a couple of fund raising opportunities that are coming up. The deadline for
the cookie dough is Nov.17 and the nuts is Nov.24. She also asked for
volunteers to man the table and bake for the bake sale that will be held on
Nov. 19 in the cafeteria. Sandra Crossen awarded an
Enhanced Member star to Dave Spencer. Cherie Barth gave a brief
update about the Hites Foundation - $25 was raised at Honors Green Day by
the chapter and the latest update at the International level indicated that
$269.000 of the $350,000 goal had been reached. She also gave an update
about the Ohio Specialty License Plate - Rep. Oelslager will introduce the
bill when the legislature returns to session. Sandra Crossen gave a
follow-up report on Make A Difference Day - 67 people collected 166 bags of
trash from 9 parks and 3 roadways. The Boy Scouts recovered a 1,000 ft. coil
of stolen electrical wire. She also distributed a National Day of Doing Good
Annual Challenge Patch to all who attended. Julie Sproul and Carol
Kirkpatrick gave their impressions of the lecture by John David. Jeremy Smith talked about
the hijinks that ensued at the Leadership Conference at Hocking College. Sandra Crossen gave a
follow-up report on the Honors Green Day Project - 13 locks of hair were
collected for Locks of Love. 14 cell phones were collected. The art projects
were a hit with the younger set. No middle or high school students attended,
although 168 Stark/Summit County schools were invited. 43 total participants
took part in the project. Sandra Crossen discussed
the upcoming Founders Day/Good as Gold Week activities from Nov. 17-21: the
sidewalk chalk after today's meeting, the Bake Sale on Nov. 19 from 10-6,
and also reminded everyone to wear their Phi Theta Kappa apparel. Cherie Barth explained a
little about the Hallmarks and what they mean. Cherie Barth gave some
background on the New Beginnings Holiday Party to be held on Dec. 12 and
reminded everyone to have the gifts returned to her office by Dec. 8. Sandra Crossen announced
that the Free Health Clinic needed technical and painting help, the ICC
student government requested volunteers to help update club websites, and
the digital picture frame in the hallway display case was donated by Walmart. Sandra Crossen requested
volunteers to act as marshals at Fall Graduation to be held at the Canton
Civic Center on Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. and greeters for Welcome Back to SSCT on
Jan. 12 and 13 from 7 a.m-1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Sandra Crossen announced
that the next meeting will be held on Jan. 17 at noon with a scrapbook party
to follow. Cherie Barth inquired if
there would be any interest in a Professional Development Day where students
would role play diversity issues with faculty. Cherie Barth led 8 new
members in the informal induction ceremony and reminded all that the formal
induction will occur on Apr. 26 at 2 p.m. in the SSCT atrium. The meeting was adjourned
