Accommodations |
|
All students wishing to
utilize special accommodations need to contact the DSS office prior to
the open registration period for the upcoming semester. Please keep in
mind that we need sufficient time to review the documentation, schedule
a mandatory interview with a counselor, schedule special accommodations
requested for the COMPASS test and registering for courses. Without
appropriate documentation and sufficient notice of a students intent to
utilize special accommodations, students may encounter a delay in the
delivery of services.
To enable our students with disabilities to maximize their educational
potential and participate in all facets of the college, we offer the
following supportive services that are arranged through the DSS
counselor and are based on a review of an individual student's needs,
documentation, course selection and educational goals. Guidance,
counseling and support are provided throughout a student's enrollment.
The services include priority registration, note takers, readers,
scribes, CCTVs and other specialized equipment, interpreters, real-time
captioning, and alternate media. In addition, some students may require
accommodations for testing which involve extended time, alternative
testing formats, technological assistance or a distraction free setting.
Please note that Stark State College is not responsible for the

personal needs as related to
eating, using restroom facilities, taking medication, and
transportation. The College does not provide assistance in these areas.
Accommodation Procedures
Students who are eligible to receive services through DSS will be
provided with an accommodation checklist each semester
which specifies accommodations they are entitled to receive.
To request an Accommodations Checklist - schedule an appointment with a
DSS counselor 2-3 weeks before the first week of classes. On-line
and distance students may set up a phone or email appointment. DSS will
provide an accommodations checklist for you to give to each of your
instructors.
Students are responsible for submitting the accommodations checklist to
your instructor during the first week of class so the instructor will
know what accommodations you need. Distance students will be sent a PDF
of their accommodations letter. They should forward this to their
instructor if they wish accommodations for that class. Students are
encouraged to meet with each of their instructors to explain why they
need the specified accommodations and work with their instructor to
fully benefit from the classroom experience.
Students should not wait until they begin to have serious problems in
class to discuss accommodations with an instructor. Faculty members are
not expected to make adjustments unless given adequate notice of
students' needs. |
