Overview
Not only will you get sound foundational knowledge of emergency fire services, you’ll also work in teams to accomplish goals, receive critical hands-on training on fire apparatus and equipment, experience live fire training and more. This degree pathway includes the level I and II firefighter certification courses and EMT and paramedic certification courses, along with courses designed to enhance the skills necessary to excel as a fire-fighter/paramedic.

Accelerated Paramedic
Stark State College offers an accelerated paramedic program that may take as little as nine months to complete. The program starts annually in spring semester as day classes. Financial aid is also available. Contact Jaime Jones at jjones@starkstate.edu for more details.
Traditional Paramedic
Stark State College offers a traditional paramedic program that works well for students who need a moderate academic schedule to complete a paramedic program. The program duration is approximately 15 months. The program starts annually in fall semester as day classes. Financial aid is also available. Accreditations
Stark State College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The emergency fire services program is accredited by the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS #008 and follows the national standard curriculum according to the Ohio Administrative Code 4765 for all levels of EMS providers.
The Paramedic Program of Stark State College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

According to various sections of the Ohio Law and Regulations for Certification and Licensure Boards, persons convicted of any felony will not be accepted into the emergency fire services and the emergency medical services programs at Stark State College. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor may not be accepted into the emergency fire services and emergency medical services programs at Stark State College. For more information, contact the Emergency Fire Services Program Coordinator.
Please be advised that this curriculum could change. Students are required to follow the program curriculum in effect when they begin taking technical courses, not when students are accepted to the College or program.
Program learning outcomes
- Function within a fire department as a member of a fire department emergency response crew.
- Function within an organization as a paramedic.
- Ability to respond to and mitigate any type of emergency situation including by not limited to structure fires, medical calls, life threatening injuries, natural disasters, terrorist threats, hazardous material incidents.
- Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals who are working toward a common goal. Namely to save life, property, and the environment.
- Ability to effectively operate hand tools and power tools to enable the firefighter/paramedic to perform the skills needed to mitigate an emergency incident involving people, buildings, and the environment.
