Even before I completed the first grade, I knew that I would one day teach mathematics. At that time, mathematics was about problem-solving, and if someone could multiply before I could, well, I was envious and determined to learn how. Now that determination is centered around my students and their learning. As a licensed secondary educator with master’s degrees in both education and mathematics, I am proficient in content knowledge, as well as the art of educating. My experience and training equip me to reach individual students with the best methods and explanations. I have enjoyed teaching the students at Stark State College since 2009. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy serving departmental initiatives, such as establishing our first annual mathematics competition. I also am devoted to my faith in Jesus and my family. In my spare time, I enjoy running, cycling and the outdoors.

I took the non-traditional route to my education: After graduating from high school, I tried college (including Stark State, coincidentally), but quickly found that I was still too immature. After failing for multiple semesters, I worked odd jobs (restaurants, factories, etc.) for a few years before joining the US Air Force. In 2004, 10 years after high school, I used the GI Bill to go back to school and earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in about three and a half years. I am currently finishing my doctorate in higher education through the University of Toledo. My wife and I live in Jackson Township and have three boys – one in college and two at home.

Mathematics can be quite challenging, and I understand the difficulties many students face as they juggle work, school and family. My great passion is helping students understand math. One of the most gratifying aspects of teaching for me is seeing a person’s face “light up” when he/she understands a concept. I have been a full-time faculty member at Stark State College since August 2005. My academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2001 and master’s degree in mathematics in 2004, both from Youngstown State University. I value each day in the classroom as unique and I look forward to the experiences to come as they will foster my professional and personal growth. I hope to see many more students’ faces light up in my math classes.
