Medical Laboratory Technology - Corinne Zellers, MSTE, MLS (ASCP)

A lifelong love for science guided Corinne Zellers, MSTE, MLS (ASCP), into a fulfilling career as a medical laboratory scientist (MLS) and program coordinator of Stark State’s medical laboratory technology (MLT) program. Here, Corinne highlights the vital impact of MLT professionals and the unique strengths of Stark State’s comprehensive program.

 

Q: What initially drew you to the MLS field?

A: It was my love of science. From the time I was in the fifth grade, I knew I wanted to be a scientist. I had a fascination with the human body and how incredibly the body systems work together. I also knew I wanted to be able to help people but did not want to have direct contact with patients. Being an MLS allowed me to provide outstanding patient care indirectly.

Q: What is an MLS?

A: The work of an MLS directly impacts patient outcomes by delivering accurate and timely laboratory test results to health care providers. They’re essential for diagnosing conditions, monitoring treatment effectiveness and guiding patient care decisions.

Q: Have you always worked in higher ed?

A: My first job after I earned bachelor’s degree was in the microbiology lab at Aultman Hospital, which was very fascinating. An MLS working in the microbiology lab must look at a petri dish full of bacteria and be able to identify the pathogen and do a full work up on the bacteria that is causing the infection, which includes antibiotic sensitivity testing. This information provides the physician with diagnosis and appropriate treatment for their patient.

Q: As the MLT program coordinator at Stark State College, tell us a little bit about your role. What do you enjoy the most?

A: My role is multifaceted and dynamic, encompassing curriculum development, faculty support, student advising, accreditation compliance, community engagement, quality improvement and advocacy. I aim to make sure that our program provides a rigorous and comprehensive education that prepares students for successful and fulfilling careers in medical laboratory science.

Q: What are the strengths of Stark State’s MLT program?

A: We stand out for our comprehensive curriculum, hands-on learning experiences, well-equipped student lab, expert faculty, accreditation and recognition, career preparation and placement services, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. These strengths collectively contribute to the success of our program and the excellence of our graduates in the field.

Q: What’s one thing that students are always surprised to learn about our MLT program?

A: We emphasize critical thinking, troubleshooting and communication. They quickly realize that they’re not just learning how to perform tasks. Instead, they’re gaining a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles behind them. They’re also often surprised by the diverse range of settings where MLTs can work. While hospitals and clinical laboratories are common, MLTs are also in demand in research facilities, public health agencies, pharmaceutical companies and more. This versatility opens a world of career opportunities that students may not have initially considered.

Q: Describe your approach when it comes to helping students succeed.

A: My approach is multifaceted and tailored to meet the diverse needs of each learner. I strive to create a supportive, engaging, interactive and stimulating learning environment that fosters curiosity and critical thinking skills. I also understand that learning can be challenging, so I make myself accessible to students for questions, clarification and guidance outside of scheduled class times. I encourage a supportive learning community where students feel comfortable asking for help and supporting each other.

Q: You recently received the Omicron Sigma award from American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), which is its President’s Honor Roll for Outstanding Service. Explain the significance of this achievement and describe what it means to you to receive this honor.

A: It’s an immense honor and a significant milestone in my career as a scientist and educator. Receiving this prestigious award is a humbling and gratifying experience that reinforces my commitment to the field of medical laboratory science and motivates me to strive for excellence in everything I do. It’s a symbol of recognition, appreciation and encouragement that I will cherish and carry with pride throughout my career.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who was interested in learning more about the MLT field?

A: First, start with researching the profession. Familiarize yourself with the MLT role and its contributions to health care. Learn about the types of tests they perform, the settings they work in and the impact they have on patient care. Then, explore educational the requirements and, if possible, try to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory setting. This could involve volunteering, shadowing an MLT or securing an entry-level position as a laboratory assistant. Practical experience will give you valuable insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of an MLT and help you determine if it’s the right career path for you. A mentor can also be extremely valuable. Pursuing a career in this field requires dedication, perseverance, and a genuine passion for helping others. Stay committed to your goals, remain open to new opportunities, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges that will help you grow and advance.

Q: What’s a hobby or two you enjoy?

A: My favorite hobbies outside of the classroom are gardening and practicing and teaching yoga. Both activities offer me a unique opportunity to unwind, connect with nature, and nurture my mind, body, and soul in different ways. They not only enhance my overall well-being but also enrich my teaching practice by fostering a sense of balance, mindfulness and authenticity. They remind me of the importance of cultivating presence, resilience and growth, both in the garden and on the yoga mat, and I am grateful for the lessons they continue to teach me each day.
