Emergency medical services

Along with a sound foundational knowledge you’ll get hands-on training in a medic unit, using simulation mannequins, heart monitors and more. This degree includes emergency medical technician and paramedic certification courses along with courses designed to enhance management skills in the healthcare industry. The field of paramedicine is evolving to new areas beyond emergency care in the streets, and paramedics have many new challenges caring for the ill and injured, which require a higher standard of learning, especially in light of national security.

Accelerated Paramedic

Stark State College offers an accelerated paramedic program that may take as little as nine months to complete. The program starts annually in spring semester as day classes. Financial aid is also available. Contact Jaime Jones at jjones@starkstate.edu for more details.

Traditional Paramedic

Stark State College offers a traditional paramedic program that works well for students who need a moderate academic schedule to complete a paramedic program. The program duration is approximately 15 months. The program starts annually in fall semester as day classes. Financial aid is also available. Accreditations

Stark State College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The emergency medical program is accredited by the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS #008 for EMS education and follows the national standard curriculum according to the Ohio Administrative Code 4765 for all levels of EMS providers.

The Paramedic Program of Stark State College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Please be advised that this curriculum could change. Students are required to follow the program curriculum in effect when they begin taking technical courses, not when students are accepted to the College or program.

Program learning outcomes

  • Perform rapid assessment and triage in the pre-hospital setting of victims of all ages who have traumatic or medical conditions.
  • Implement critical thinking skills in making field diagnoses to determine life threatening vs. non-life threatening injuries and illnesses, working as a team member to accomplish tasks quickly.
  • Perform invasive skills and procedures within scope of practice to administer supportive and life-saving treatment in an aseptic and safe manner.
  • Demonstrate accurate and thorough documentation for each victim and patient situation.
  • Communicate efficiently with other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate competency required to be employable by Fire Departments, EMS Services, hospitals, and other healthcare agencies.
