In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1990, Stark State College provides information relating to crime statistics and security measures to prospective students, students and employees.
Stark State College complies with all laws of the State of Ohio. Students who are charged under or convicted of violations of criminal law may also be subject to the College disciplinary system for the same offense when the offense occurs on campus or has an adverse effect upon the College and its educational task.
Campus Security Office
The Campus Security Office coordinates all security operations on campus. The Security Office consists of the chief of security, three full-time officers, 24 part-time officers, all of whom are active or retired police officers, a coordinator for emergency planning & security, a part-time administrative assistant, and student assistants. Security officers are assigned to work at all times when students or the public are using any College facility. Campus security works closely with township, county and state police agencies.
Emergencies and 911
All students and staff should be aware of our local 911 service. Anyone can get immediate emergency police, fire or medical service by dialing 911 on any in-house or public telephone on campus. You should use this service only when you need the police, fire truck or ambulance to respond to an EMERGENCY situation. If it is necessary to call 911, you should contact security as soon as possible and advise them of the situation. Potential criminal actions and other campus emergencies are to be reported directly by a student or staff member to the Security Office by dialing 330-704-2582 or going to the Security Office (S104) which is located on the first floor of the Student Services Center next to the main entrance. In addition to reporting violations to security, students may contact a member of the College faculty or staff who will assist. Depending upon the nature and extent of the violation, the situation will be handled or forwarded to security.
Red emergency phones are located throughout the college for emergency use. When picked up, the phone will connect you with the college operator who will then contact Campus Security for assistance. After 8 p.m., the emergency phones will dial 911 when picked up.
College buildings and grounds are maintained with concern for safety and security.
Dissemination of information
Information about major crimes occurring on campus, or any type of activity which may threaten the safety, security or property of any member of the College community, will be made available via the College monitors, student email, campus posters and the student newspaper. This dissemination of information is to make all students, faculty, staff and community members aware of a possible threat to their safety and security; to counter the effects of rumor and inaccurate information, and so individuals can take reasonable action to protect themselves and their property from being victimized. A security log listing serious criminal violations on campus is kept in the Security Office. Anyone may view this log upon request.
Substance abuse
Stark State College strictly prohibits the unlawful possession, use or distribution of drugs and alcohol by faculty, staff and students on College property at any time. Stark State College is a drug-free, alcohol-free institution. Sanctions for violations of this policy are fairly and consistently enforced; up to and including discharge of employees and expulsion of students. The Stark State College drug or alcohol prevention program is a referral system which is available to any member of the College community. Anyone inquiring about community resources dealing with these problems should contact the Office of Student Services or the Campus Security Office for assistance.
Security escorts and personal safety
Security escorts may be requested by anyone leaving the buildings alone after dark or anytime a person has a legitimate reason to feel his or her safety is at risk, by dialing 330-704-2582. The cooperation and involvement of students and staff in a campus security program is absolutely essential. All students must assume responsibility for their own personal safety and the security of their belongings by taking simple, common-sense precautions.
